Berkeley, California Rapper/ producer/ vocalist Rexx Life Raj (born Faraji Wright) found his love for music by way of his church upbringing and the encouragement of his mother, Linda. While Linda nurtured his creativity, Raj’s father Odis taught him the beauty and challenges of being black as well as the value of hard work. In his youth, Raj endured the death of his best friend Devin as well as the incarceration of his close confidant Ronnie. Out of creativity, consciousness, and adversity were born the musical stylings of Rexx Life Raj.
Though music may have been his first love, it was not the only avenue at which Raj excelled. His natural athletic ability and incredible work ethic saw him garner a full scholarship from Berkeley High to Division 1 football powerhouse, Boise State University. Raj played offensive line for Boise State from 2008-2012, using football as a vehicle to gain his college education. Amidst questions of why he didn’t turn pro, Raj graduated from Boise with a degree in Communications and subsequently turned his full attention to his budding music career.
This proved the right move, as Raj’s talent built him a buzz that has seen him collaborate with and garner cosigns from artists such as Pharrel, Russ , G-Eazy, Scott Storch, and Goapele. Furthermore, Raj’s music has earned him accolades from press outlets such as Pitchfork, FADER, Noisey, HotNewHipHop, DJBooth, TeamBackPack, GoodMusicAllDay, Berkelyside and more.
The duality of Berkeley is that it is home to an incredible art culture that promotes creativity, individuality and freedom. Simultaneously, Berkeley is a city with history steeped in activism.. where individuals have come together to affect social change.
Creative but conscious.
Free but moral.
Rexx Life Raj’s epitomizes this duality. His music flows seamlessly from wildly hilarious anecdotes on the trivial to sharply poignant observations on life’s daily struggles.
